Our funding is helping the Food Teachers Centre improve food education by investing in teachers. Food teaching can be demanding, particularly for new or non-specialist teachers who may have limited training, resources or access to professional support.
The programme will provide professional development, mentoring and resources through a national community of food educators. It aims to support around 10,000 teachers, mentor 100 new teachers and create more than 1,000 additional professional development places over three years.
Teachers will be able to access practical guidance, tried-and-tested resources and advice from experienced colleagues. The work will also support recruitment and retention by helping teachers feel more confident, connected and equipped to deliver safe, engaging and high-quality food education.
Alongside direct support, the Food Teachers Centre will strengthen the voice of teachers in discussions about the curriculum, qualifications and the future of food education. This national infrastructure is important because stronger classroom learning depends on a skilled and supported workforce.
We are funding this work because food education gives young people knowledge and practical skills they can carry into adult life. By building teacher confidence and capacity, the programme can improve the quality and consistency of learning for pupils across the country.
